A daily look can help you spot a change—even when your feet feel fine.

Your feet may feel fine. But have you looked at them today?

If you have diabetes, check your feet each day. Look for a new sore, cut, blister, or swelling.

The main thing to know

Do not wait for pain to check your feet. If you spot a new problem, contact your healthcare team right away.

Why check when your feet feel fine?

Diabetes can harm the nerves in your feet. This may make it hard to feel a small cut or blister.

It can also reduce blood flow. A sore may take longer to heal. Looking each day helps you spot changes you may not feel.

Look. Check. Get help.

Make these steps part of your day.

Sit and look

Sit in a safe place with good light. Take off your shoes and socks. Look at the tops, sides, heels, and between your toes.

Check the bottoms too

Use a mirror that will not break to see the bottoms of your feet. If you cannot see or reach them, ask someone you trust to help.

Look for a change

Check for a new sore, cut, blister, or swelling. Also look for red spots or changes in skin color. Tell your healthcare team about a new warm spot.

Act on a new problem

Contact your healthcare team right away. Do not wait for your next visit or for it to hurt. Your team can tell you what care you need.

Make it easy to remember

Pick the same time each day. You could check when you take off your shoes in the evening. Keep your safe mirror where you can find it.

A home check does not replace a foot exam. Ask your healthcare team to show you how to check. Keep your care visits too.

Ask at your next visit

  • Can you show me how to check my feet?

  • What changes should I look for?

  • Who should I call if I find a problem?

Your feet and your numbers both matter

A foot check is one part of your care. Keeping track of your blood sugar is another.

Telecare's app lets you save your blood sugar readings and look back at them. Need help learning the app? We can show you how to get started.

The app does not check your feet or replace your doctor. Saving a reading does not mean a doctor has seen it.

Get care from your healthcare team

For a new foot problem, contact your healthcare team right away. Do not wait for an app alert or a WhatsApp reply from Telecare.

If you think you have a medical emergency, get medical help right away. Telecare does not provide emergency care or watch your readings all the time. No alert does not mean you are safe. This guide is for general learning. Follow your own care plan.
